Have you heard about the changes proposed for the judo uniform? These are quite radical, even though they are small, and have got the judo world talking — heatedly. And no wonder. Any attempt to change something as ancient as the judo gi, or as widely used and popular, is going to hit resistance. Indeed, the question immediately comes to my mind, why would anyone want to change an ancient tradition that does no-one any harm? Well, the advocates of the change talk about the need to get up to speed with the big improvements that have come into the martial arts world with the development of new fabrics and technologies. These things are giving judo new opportunities to grow and enhance, and so they must be evaluated carefully and not dismissed out of hand.
