Brendan Joseph Hansen
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Brendan Joseph Hansen had to meet his nemesis again, Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima. Just as in Athens four years ago, Kitajima proved faster, defending his title in the 100-meter breaststroke and breaking Brendan Hansen’s world record by 0.22 seconds.
"I’ve just had a really off year, on a really important year, and I just feel like that’s not the last you’re going to see of me," he said. "I’m going to bring it back and I won’t be done until I at least have a legitimate shot at those world records again."
At the end of the event Brendan Hansen swam over the lane lines to reach Kitajima in the middle of the pool and congratulate his rival.
"I just kept it simple — broken English so he could understand me," he said. "You got to tip your hat off to somebody that does something like that in a pressure-packed race. That’s a hell of a swim, and he is a true champion."
