Minors and Health Insurance in Indiana
Minors in Indiana are most often covered by the health insurance of one or both parents. The most economical way to insure children is with group insurance, usually on the job, which offers family coverage. This is both the least expensive and the most comprehensive.
When it comes to Indiana health insurance minors are also included in the one year waiting period for pre-existing conditions. This makes it even more important to insure children and have continuous coverage for children.
Low income families have options for health insurance for children. TANF families who are losing benefits since the parent is returning to work can keep low income insurance for up to one year, for example.
CHIP is the Children’s Health Insurance Program and covers low to middle income families who do not qualify for Medicaid. In Indiana, CHIP is part of the Hoosier Healthwise program of insurance for minors, pregnant women and low income families. Hoosier Healthwise has little or no cost to families and operates as a managed care program.
Hoosier Healthwise covers Indiana minors for regular medical care but also provides for dental and vision care and prescription drug costs. Mental Health services are also available to minors as well as to adults in the program.
